Ore’s Nigerian Meatpies Recipe with a Twist!

Hello everyone!! One Thing I am hoping to do in 2014 is blog more. In-fact I have made a list of things to blog about and this is one of the first ones since it’s been a while since I have done any recipes. Today’s recipe would be Meatpies!!
Meatpies are a popular snack enjoyed by Africans and Nigerians all over the world it is quite similar to the British Meat-pie but different depending on the ingredients and looks different too.
BUT Nigerian Meatpies are very popular and delicious! it is somewhat a balanced diet it has carbs, protein, veggies, oils and vitamins! and here is my recipe!!


Servings:10-15
Time Estimated: Prep 1hour, Bake 35-40min
What You need
THE DOUGH:

  • 4 C. flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp. Baking soda
  • 2 C. butter
  • extra flour for kneading
    THE MEAT MIXTURE:
  • 2 C. ground meat (300-500g)
  • 2 medium-sized sweet potatoes
  • 1 tsp. garlic (minced or grated)
  • 1 tbs. ginger (minced or grated)
  • 1 C. carrots (chopped into tiny cubes)
  • 1/2 tbs. butter
  • 1/2 tbs. of grapeseed oil
  • a dash of Seasonings you choose to add ( onion salt, chicken broth poeder, spicy red pepper, curry)
  • 2 tbs. flour
    Making the Dough
  • Combine the flour,  and baking soda together. mix thoroughly
  • Add butter, and 2 of the eggs together
  • Knead the dough. and add water but by bit till it’s a nice thick but malleable texture. Be careful not to add too much water.
  • Cover the dough in clear wrap and let it rest in the fridge while you make the meat mixture
  • preheat oven in 335F The Meat Mixture
  • Dice the potatoes into little cubes (about .5 inch or 1 centimeter length).
  • Place the potatoes, meat, very little water, carrots and spices into a small saucepan, and cook until the meat is done. You can taste the mixture to see if it is adequate.
    Putting it all together
  • mix the last egg.
  • lay cutting board with dry flour rub some on your palms as well.
  • Roll out some dough and flatten it...it should not be too thick.Cut the dough into a circle with the cover of a small saucepan/pot
  • brush a layer of egg on the circle of dough
  • add a few teaspoons of the mixture in the bottom crescent of the circle then fold the circle over
  • dip the fork in the egg mixture and seal the edge of your meatpies by pressing the fork on it. repeat (dipping the fork in the egg) every time you notice the dough sticking to the egg
  • repeat for every circle you make until all dough is finished 
  • Place the meat pies on a sheet with a little space in-between each one, and bake until slightly brown for 35-40 minutes.
