THE ORDINARY GRANACTIVE RETINOID 5% IN SQUALENE REVIEW

I had heard so many good things about the Ordinary and after using their foundation for almost two years, I really wanted to give their skincare line a try so I purchased a few of the products and will be posting reviews after extensive use of each of them as well as the foundation.

CLAIM
Highly-Stable, Water-Free Solution of 0.5% Ester of All-Trans Retinoic Acid

This water-free solution contains a 5% concentration of an advanced retinoid active complex called Granactive Retinoid that has been shown to offer better results against multiple signs of aging than retinol without any of the irritation and drawbacks common with retinol. Granactive Retinoid, an active technology from Grant Industries, is a solubilized system of Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate, a highly-advanced form of retinoid which is, in fact, a non-prescription ester of all-trans direct retinoic acid that offers a multi-fold better effect against signs of aging than retinol, retinyl palmitate and nearly all other forms of non-prescription retinoid.

This product uses next-generation retinoid active technologies which have been shown to achieve better reduction in signs of aging than retinol without irritation. These technologies cannot be compared directly with retinol itself in terms of concentration because they include a different retinoid molecule, in a similar way that Retinol cannot be compared with Retinoic Acid in terms of concentration. If you have interest in a retinol product, please refer to our Retinol portfolio above which products contain pure retinol and cost less since many retinol technologies cost less than their next-generation counterparts like Granactive Retinoid

INGREDIENTS
Squalane, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Bisabolol, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Fruit Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil.

THOUGHTS
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane has Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (granactive) is one of the best acting Retinol products for the skin: this was what led me to purchase this serum. However, I was utterly disappointed with this product. I really wanted to like this and being someone who has been using retinoids since 2015. I went for the highest percentage since my skin is used to it already. I stopped using InstaNatural once they changed their formulations, I switched to Rainshadow Labs which actually worked but I noticed they stopped putting their retinoids in amber bottles and rather in clear bottles. A big NO. (Retinoids oxidize quickly). and I personally feel like this change made their retinoids less active. I just noticed they stopped working on my skin. So, I was in the search for a good retinoid which won't break the bank and since I've heard so much about The Ordinary I wanted to give it a try.

To be honest, The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane did not work out for me. I actually saw a review on this product from a YouTuber who had almost the same reaction as I did but thought it was the retinol. But for me, I knew it wasn't because my skin was used to the chemical (although in lower percentages and lower grade).

The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane broke me out entirely on my face, I STILL have the scars on my face taking forever to heal. I did quite the opposite of what Retinoids are made to do. I had breakouts on my forehead, my cheeks, and a giant one on the left side of my nose. I had breakouts where I don't usually break out. I personally think its the squalene; I found the product too oily for me. I used it for three weeks total (two more weeks after I discovered the breakouts) because I wanted to be sure that it was what was causing the breakouts (worst two weeks of my life) and to be sure that maybe, even though it was breaking me out, it would work on my wrinkles, texture and help my skin to glow. But I saw no change in skin texture, no improvements in acne, just more pimples, big painful ones.

So, I stopped using The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane on my face and switched to using it on my knees and elbows to see if the retinoid actually works even if my skin on my face was reacting to it. Of course, there were no breakouts on my body but for changes in my dark knees and elbows, they were was slim to none. Very minimal change in texture or color. I felt like it was a waste of money. I have never been so disappointed in a skincare purchase that I researched so much prior to buying.

Maybe it was just for me and all those other reviews it worked for them but for me, The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane didn't work. I still have hopes in The Ordinary as a brand I have tried some of their other products with upcoming reviews. Let's hope they don't disappoint.

RATING: 1/5

WILL REPURCHASE: Never
